A personal project based on the novel by Bonnie Garmus.

The story
Set between 1950 - 1960 it tells the story of Elizabeth Zott, a beautiful, brilliant but unappreciated chemist in a male-dominated field. Despite her intelligence and groundbreaking work, her male colleagues consistently undermine her contributions. Then she meets Calvin Evans, a Nobel-worthy scientist who respects her intellect and becomes her partner. Things improve until Calvin suddenly dies, leaving Elizabeth to cope as a single mother.

In an unexpected turn, she becomes the host of a cookery TV show – Supper at six. Using her background she turns cooking into chemistry lessons, inspiring women to challenge societal norms. Her unconventional approach turns the show into a phenomenon and she ends up on the cover of Life Magazine.

Graphic props
I have created a series of graphic props to tell her story. The cover of Life Magazine, with an advert for a fictional brand on the back. Calvins death certificate, and for the cookery show, labels for spices, tinned tomatoes brand and labels, a book of gummed jar labels (a gift to the studio audience of the TV show).

Life Magazine. Recreating the iconic brand with a fake cover feature. The back cover features a full page advert for the fictional American cigarette brand, Trenton. Artwork techniques: mainly digital but also combining watercolor with digital artwork on the back and assembling the prop.
Calvin Evans death certificate. Artwork techniques: a combination of digital and manual methods incorporating a mechanical typewriter, stamps and handwriting.
A book of gummed and perforated labels for home canning. A gift to the live audience of Supper at six. Artwork techniques: digital and manual methods including the perforation and assembling the booklet.
Spice labels for the set of the TV show, Supper at six. Artwork techniques: a combination of digital and manual including handwriting the labels.
Happy Garden Brand. Fictional brand for tinned tomatoes. Artwork techniques: a combination of digital methods designing the brand and label, creating the illustration of tomatoes using acrylic and watercolor paint.
